East Atlanta Strut 5k

October 21, 2009

I have lived in Atlanta for a long time (forever, in fact) and have done a number of “neighborhood” races. This year, I decided to join some friends at the East Atlanta Strut 5k. This race was held on September 17, 2009 which was a Saturday. It had been raining in Atlanta and I was a little worried about the rain, especially when I woke up at 5:45 AM to POURING rain.
By the time I left my house at about 6:15 the rain had turned into a light drizzle and when we arrived at the race at 7:10 AM, there wasn’t any rain at all. Perfect. It was just that everything was really wet and the air was so thick with humidity we began to feel like were were in a sauna.
Packet pick-up was uneventful for those of us that pre-registered and even for those that needed to sign-up on race day.
The race began promptly at 8:00 AM and we traversed our way through the East Atlanta neighborhoods. Around mile 1.5 I separated from my friend and ran the remainder of the race by myself. There were a few people that I really wanted to pass, which I did and felt satisfied when I finished the race at about 25:15. That is the fastest I had ever run a 5k, so I was quite pleased. z
The post race refreshments were good. We had bagels from Publix and donuts from Krispy Kreme as well as some Fuze drinks.
Not too long after the race it started to rain again. Pour, I mean. Completely drenching rains that continued throughout the day (and for the weeks to come). My friends mom was awarded a second place finish in the 50 and up group and we stayed around and waited for her to receive her award. We were all really proud of her.
I will definitely be doing this race again next year.
